Accompanied: The Invisible Hands That Guide Your Practice

Sep 10, 2025

What if I told you that every time you practice yoga, you're joined by thousands of invisible well-wishers? That you are accompanied by the subtle presence of every yogi who ever struggled with the same discipline, asked the same questions, and sought the same peace you're seeking right now?

Every breath you take on your mat has the power to connect you to an invisible network of support that spans centuries. The question isn't whether this lineage exists – it's whether you're ready to avail yourself of it.

Right now, we're in Pitru Paksha the Hindu fortnight (September 7-21 this year) dedicated to honoring the ancestors. This isn't just about lighting candles for departed relatives - it's about recognizing the unseen support system that has the power to transform your yoga practice in ways you might never have considered.

Think about it: every strength you possess, every moment of resilience, every flash of wisdom – these aren't entirely "yours." They're gifts passed down through generations. Maybe your grandmother's fierce determination lives in your warrior poses. Or your grandfather's quiet patience echoes in your meditation. That mentor who believed in you when you didn't believe in yourself? Their voice can still encourage you during challenging moments.

But here's what's even more remarkable: when you step onto your mat, you're tapping into something far greater than personal ancestry. You're joining a river of practice that has flowed unbroken for millennia.

Though they may have sat in caves or forests, rather than studios, you're embodying the same inquiring spirit as countless seekers who came before you – people who faced uncertainty, heartbreak, and joy and asked the same questions: How do I find tranquility when everything feels chaotic? How do I stay strong when I feel broken? How do I remember who I am beneath all the noise?

It changes everything when you realize you don't have to figure it out alone.

In our performance-oriented yoga culture, it can be easy to forget this profound truth: every time you step onto your mat, you're participating in one of humanity's longest-running experiments in awakening. You're never practicing alone.

A Simple Practice for Connecting with Lineage

Before your next practice, try this simple ritual:

Arrive with intention. As you unroll your mat, silently acknowledge that this space is shared with countless others who have sought the same peace you seek.

Breathe with your lineage. Take three deep breaths, imagining with each inhale that you're drawing in the wisdom of those who came before you. With each exhale, offer gratitude for their courage to seek and their generosity to share.

Invite their presence. Close your eyes and picture the invisible circle that surrounds your practice – your personal ancestors offering their hard-earned wisdom, generations of yogis lending their discoveries, teachers you've never met extending their insights across time and space. Feel how held you are. Feel how supported.

Hold the connection. As you move through your practice, carry this awareness with you, periodically reminding yourself: "I am not alone in this. I am supported by all who have walked this path."

Close with gratitude. End your practice by placing your hands at your heart and silently acknowledging with gratitude any insights you've found.
